Winter Light

“Walking under the shadowy winter branches on the Heath, I was reminded of theatre sets from the 1920s and imagined the miniature insect dramas happening all around, behind the scenes. To create that atmosphere I layered 2-dimensional landscape elements against a collaged backdrop of bare branches and trunks.

I discovered that there are more than 450 types of moth living on the Heath. 450! Inspired, like the Diaghilev costumes of the Ballet Russe, by creatures from the natural world, the heroine of Winter Light wears a costume paying homage to the Angle Shade Moth.”
