Late Summer in Hampstead
2026Oil on linen20 x 25cm
I was born in Paris but came to London first as an Erasmus student as part of my French Literature MA at Sorbonne University sometime in the early nineties. One of the places I visited most then was the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead. Not having much to do at weekends, I’d go to their double or triple bills and that would kill a Sunday or two. That’s when my relationship with Hampstead started. Its atmospheric streets and buildings, the walk through history towards the park and its open horizons fed my growing love of London.
When I came back to study at Camberwell College of Arts in 1995, I still regularly visited from South London. Each and every one of these visits were significant. Hampstead is special to me as a place to wander and get lost. Years later I took my kids to the ponds on sweltering summer days. We would have ice cream and picnics.
When I restarted painting in my forties, after a long time away from it, these early memories of walking the streets of Hampstead in wonder fed my inspiration.
I relish the opportunity to revisit Hampstead and this time make a painting to capture a love story spanning over thirty years.s coming soon.
